Beacon of Comfort

Wild Florida: Red-Shouldered Hawk
Visitor outside of my window at work today. I didn’t see the lizard until I pulled the picture off of the camera.

“Baby Steps to 5k”
I’ve never been able to run. Like, at all. But I’ve been inspired by the progress some of my friends have made jogging, so I started a new workout routine today called “Baby Steps to 5k.” Tonight–and for the next few weeks–I’m supposed to just “walk briskly,” but Samsung isn’t playing around. The disembodied voice at one point asked, “are you well enough to workout?” 😵🤬
At the risk of oversharing, I’m posting this here to mark a milestone and maybe, just maybe, keep me honest. It feels good and I hope I can keep it up.

The Grammys and Hot Take Rehab
There’s something about the internet sometimes that brings out the worst in some of us. I just posted a snarky picture on Reddit before thinking better of it and deleting the post; but then, not twenty minutes later, I logged in here to bring this gem of a fully-baked idea into the world:
Someone on Twitter could probably break down the reasons why my opinion is retrograde and I should really just shut up, but: I don’t care about the Grammys.
But then I thought: why does it matter? And why should anyone care what I think about the Grammys? So many of us are already screaming ill-informed, half-baked, intentionally provocative words at each other just because we can, and my opinion is about as original (but nowhere near as nutritious) as a can of Pringles.
So, you know what? If you like the Grammys, I support you. I hope you enjoyed it and got to hear some great music. I’m going to keep working on slow thinking and empathy over here while you have a good time.
After I put down the phone for tonight.
Milo Talon and the Walmart Readers
I saw two ternagers sitting on the floor quietly reading in the Walmart books section earlier today, and something about the sight nourished my soul in a way few things have recently. As I’m wrapped up in a throw on the couch reading a Louis L’Amour paperback, it feels good to join them in spirit tonight.
I’ve mentioned Walmart books here before, I know. I have a real fondness for books from the grocery store, from the dollar store, from Walmart. These were the books that nourished me when I was a kid. I can remember standing in the magazine aisle at Winn-Dixie, choosing a paperback or a copy of Mad magazine to read on long summer car rides. I vividly and fondly remember most of those books, even as I’ve been trained by grad school and the middle brow internet literary culture to scoff at popcorn writers in favor of important literature. These books are not a guilty pleasure, but a wholesome and sincere one.
Tonight I’m standing with the kids from Walmart alongside Milo Talon in the shadow of St. Charles Peak. It feels like a good way to end 2018.
The Incredible Machine
Somehow this 20 second clip of a solution to a level of the 1993 Sierra DOS classic The Incredible Machine represents the entirety of my creative output for today.
Honestly, though, I spent a fair bit of time running into walls all day while trying to solve problems for work. That was after going home sick, too, so I’m going to let this stand for today and get back to it tomorrow.
For what it’s worth, this is the very first video I’ve ever uploaded to YouTube. So there’s that, too. Here’s to more exciting videos in the future!
My Ethic
Is to create something everyday. As evidence that I was here, if nothing else.
I am here. I was here.
